School Beginnings
Tikkun Olam was founded by Yoash Mayende in 2015 to foster opportunities for Jewish students to learn academics and participate in their Jewish heritage. Though Student absenteeism in Uganda is high and one in three children in primary school does not attend school every day, Tikkun Olam Primary School has has a good attendence rate and is ranked 3rd in the district.

In partnership with the Minneapolis Jewish Federation and Tikkun Olam Primary School, Global Village Connect has implemented a School Lunch and Farm Project to help the community. School lunch programs increase school enrollment and attendance—especially for girls. For many students, lunch is their first and sometimes, only meal of the day. Our School Lunch Project provides all day school students with a minimum of one meal a day and boarding students with three meals a day, allowing students to focus on learning and increase nutrition. |
A sustainable school farm that provides food security
Our Sustainable Organic Farming project planted ground nuts, eggplants, beans, and potatoes on three acres of land. In the fall, beans, maize (corn), greens, tomatoes, ground nuts, and eggplants will be planted. In 2019, we built a kitchen and food storage unit to ensure that nutritious meals are properly prepared and delivered each day students attend school. To increase sustainability, teachers and students are taught best farming practices from a local GVC farming expert who oversees the farm.

Pads for Girls
Young women often drop out of school when they are menstruating as they do not have the necessary hygiene products. Days For Girls, located in Namutumba, makes "menstrual kits” and educates young women on female reproductive health. GVC raises funds to provide these kits to older girls at Tikkun Olam Primary School. Funds will be collected by Global Village Connect and given directly to Days For Girls.
