It was a day of celebration for the entire Buppala community and for Global Village Connect. On our last day in Buppala – part of our March community outreach trip to Uganda – we shared in the delivery of 50 goats, our largest distribution of goats to date.
There were smiling children and goats everywhere, meeting for the first time. An added bonus – each new goat came fully adorned with a funky, tie-dyed collar and leash made by students at Radnor Middle School. View a slide show of some of the goat recipients » The goats will change the health and welfare of these families. Thank you to students, friends and families at Meadowbrook (Golden Valley, Minnesota), North Junior High (Hopkins, Minnesota) and Radnor Middle School (Wayne, Pennsylvania) for raising funds to support kids’ education through our Give a goat project. More … We are pleased to announce that we are expanding our Give a goat project to the Tororo hospice community in Uganda. On our most recent community outreach trip, Jessica Sohn and Melanie Bien met with Denis, a social worker with the community, to get the ball rolling. Denis has already begun identifying the first 10 families and Moses, our Project Manager, will begin meeting with them soon. Denis provides outreach services to 125 community members enrolled in hospice. His program offers medical support, compassionate end-of-life care, and follow-up grief counseling for adults and children. Most of the families Denis serves live way below the poverty line and are eager for the economic opportunities the Give a goat program brings to them. Stay tuned as we meet the families in Tororo. Jessica Sohn and Melanie Bien gather with Tororo community members to thank Mission Hospice.
Students at Radnor Middle School have been busy crafting funky, tie-dyed collars and leashed for the 50 milk goats that will be delivered to children at Buppala Primary School later this month. The goats — funded by Radnor students, friends and families — will change the health and welfare of multitudes of families.
Through a pen pal exchange between the two schools, the village of Buppala has been transformed over the past seven years. Radnor students have learned that they have the capacity to literally raise up a village, and Buppala students are learning that they can sustain an organic garden, develop a small business from their crops, and feed each student a healthy meal every day they attend school. Sixth grade teacher Jodi Sabre will be traveling to Uganda to help deliver the goats to Buppala families and will share pictures and stories on her blog. More … |
